Contact Lens Care Information

One of the most important steps for successfully wearing contact lenses is taking care of them properly. In fact, it is important to realize that all contact lens care products are not the same. Thanks to recent advances in technology, lens care for contact lenses can be extremely simple and can also provide unbelievable comfort throughout the day.

Proper Contact Lens Care

There are basically two types of contact lenses available: rigid and soft. Recently published research, however, has indicated a slight risk of eye infections associated with contact lens wear especially if you sleep with your lenses in. Other important factors highlighted by this research include the following:

Poor Patient Compliance - Wearers not caring properly for their lenses.

Dirty Contact Lens Cases- Wearers not cleaning their contact lens case regularly.

Steps to take to ensure eye safety:

  • Daily Cleaning - Immediately after removing your contact lenses it is essential that you clean your lenses with a cleaning solution. After removing the lens from your eye place the lens in the palm of your hand, put two or three drops of the cleaner on the lens and rub well for twenty to thirty seconds. Rinse the cleaner off with sterile saline or other solution recommended by your practitioner.
  • Disinfection - Following cleaning, it is essential that the lenses are disinfected. This prevents harmful organisms building up on the lens. Your contact lens practitioner will advise you of the best system for your type of lenses. All disinfection systems will involve soaking your lenses in certain chemicals for a specific period of time, this may range from a few hours to overnight.
  • Protein removal - Some types of contact lenses require protein removal by using an enzyme tablet. This is a more important requirement for soft contact lenses than for rigid lenses and the need is greater for lenses not replaced frequently. Your practitioner will advise whether you need to use a specific enzyme tablet as part of your contact lens regime.
  • Daily Disposables - With Daily Disposable Lenses, no lens care is required after wear since the lens is thrown away after wearing. It is essential with these lenses that they are not kept for re-use since suitable cleaning and disinfectant solution is not available.

Contact Lens Solutions and Cleaners

Different Types of Solutions and Cleaners available:
  • Saline solution is for rinsing and storing contact lenses. You may also need it for use with enzymatic cleaning tablets or cleaning/disinfecting devices. Use other products for cleaning and disinfection.
  • Daily cleaner is for cleaning your contact lenses. You place a few drops in the palm of your hand and carefully rub the lens for as long as directed, usually around 20 seconds, making sure to clean both sides. Use other products for rinsing and disinfection.
  • Regular multipurpose solution is for cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing and storing your contact lenses. Clean your lenses as you would with daily cleaner, then rinse (as long as directed) and disinfect, all with the same solution.
  • No-rub multipurpose solutions also clean, disinfect, rinse and store your lenses. With these, you rinse the lenses, then place them in the lens case with solution to clean and disinfect. When you're ready to wear the lenses, rinse them again. As with regular multipurpose solutions, no other products are necessary.
  • Regular hydrogen peroxide solution is for disinfecting your contact lenses. Before using it, you first clean and rinse your contacts using other products. Then, place them in the lens holder and fill it with the disinfecting solution. Some lens holders for hydrogen peroxide systems have a built-in neutralizer (to keep the hydrogen peroxide from stinging your eyes), but with others you need to add a neutralizing tablet. Rinse your contacts (with another product) before placing them in your eyes.
  • No-rub hydrogen peroxide solution is for cleaning, disinfecting, rinsing and storing your contact lenses. With this product, you place your lenses in the provided basket and rinse them, then place the basket in its cup and fill the cup with solution to clean and disinfect your lenses. No other products are necessary.
  • Cleaning/disinfecting devices will, as you would expect, both clean and disinfect your contact lenses. Depending on how the brand is designed, cleaning is accomplished with either ultrasonic waves or subsonic agitation, whereas disinfection occurs via multipurpose solution or ultraviolet light.

Millions of people throughout the United States enjoy the many benefits that contact lenses have to offer. As well as the obvious cosmetic advantages, many people actually see better with their contact lenses than they do with their spectacles, as contact lenses provide a more natural form of vision correction.

There are also many practical advantages for contact lens wear in many sport and recreation pastimes, and for most people their contact lens wear is safe and completely trouble free.
