Contact Lens Prescription

Understanding Your Contact Lens Prescription

Common refractive disorders of the eye such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia are measured in units called diopters. Diopters represent the amount of correction you need to normalize your vision.  The more nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic you are, the higher your prescription in diopters.

Contact Lens Prescription

The prescription for your contact lenses will generally have a minimum of three parameters; the power (sphere), the base curve(BC) and the diameter(DIA).

  • The power (sphere) is a number that will start with a + or - (i.e. +2.50, or -1.75). This will typically be a number between -20.00 and +20.00. A negative power is required to correct nearsightedness, while a positive power is used to improve farsightedness (+) of an eye.
  • The BC is a measure of the curvature of the lens. This helps it fit your cornea more comfortably since some corneas are "steeper" or "flatter" than others. A typical BC is a number between 8.0 and 10.0. DIA stand for diameter, which is a measure of the size of the lens and is typically a number between 13.00 and 15.00.
  • Cylinder is for toric lenses only, which is correction for Astigmatism, and will be a number between -4.00 and +4.00. Axis is for toric lenses only and will be a number between 0 and 180.
